Preview: ‘Canciones of Federico Garcia Lorca’ Is A Fitting Tribute To Tobias Tak

by Richard Bruton

Coming from NBM Graphic Novels in August, a fitting tribute to the late Tobias Tak, the Canciones of Federico Garcia Lorca.

Tobias Tak was one of the great Dutch comic artists, taken from us far too young, passing away in Amsterdam on 7th January 2020, shortly before his 66th birthday. He was based in London and made wonderful surreal comic strips that were published in anthologies and comics in the UK and USA. Collections of his work include Upside Down (Top Shelf, 2003) and Gaboon’s Daymare (Alternative Press, 2011). But sadly, his lyrical and beautiful adaptation of Federico García Lorca‘s poetry, finally published in English by NBM this year, comes posthumously. Another great comics artist lost.

In Canciones of Federico Garcia Lorca, Tak is adapting a legendary Spanish poet’s masterpiece into comics. Federico García Lorca’s Canciones was his volume of lyrical poetry and Tak takes 20 of these poems and transforms them into beautiful, lyrical comics – it looks absolutely gorgeous and is a perfectly fitting tribute to a great maker of comics.

Canciones of Federico Garcia Lorca, adapted by Tobias Tak, published by NBM in August as a full colour hardcover.
