The G.I.R.L. Expo Arrives! Nadia’s Mom Alive? – Unstoppable Wasp #8 Reviewed

by Josh Davison

[*Mild Spoilers Ahead!]

The day of the G.I.R.L. Young Scientists Expo has finally arrived. Nadia Van Dyne is in charge of presenting the panels, while her friends and peers showcase their research, experiments, and findings. Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier and Mockingbird are investigating an still-active Red Room site for any information on the apparent resurfacing of Nadia’s possibly still-living birth mother. Something is amiss though, and we can only hope that Janet Van Dyne and Alima can find out what it is before it’s too late.

Unstoppable Wasp #8 brings about the culmination of all of Nadia and G.I.R.L.’s research and hard work. They can finally show off their talent at an expo…but Nadia is a superhero, and they tend to have enemies.

The first half of the comic is rather tame, focusing on the setup and execution of the G.I.R.L. Expo while the Winter Soldier and Mockingbird hope to find some lead on Nadia’s mom.

Things take a turn, as the often do, around the midway point, and the comic speeds to a cliffhanger ending from there. A coalition of enemies and rivals have come together to crash the G.I.R.L. Expo, and things don’t go that easily for the Winter Soldier and Mockingbird either.

The attention paid to Nadia’s mental health and her attempts to stay healthy is a nice touch, and it further humanizes and already well-grounded character.

Gurihiru once again makes this a vibrant, energetic, and gorgeous comic book. Nadia and her friends are expressive, movement is depicted in a satisfying and flowing manner, and the color art is explosive and eye-catching.

Unstoppable Wasp #8 is another charming, funny, and endearing installment of Nadia Van Dyne’s wonderful series. Things may finally be looking up for the ladies of G.I.R.L., but their enemies won’t let things go to well. This one gets a recommendation. Feel free to check it out.

Unstoppable Wasp #8 comes to us from writer Jeremy Whitley, artist Gurihiru, letterer VC’s Joe Caramagna, and cover artist Stacey Lee.
