Usually Riverdale can be depended on to have trailers that attract new viewers. This week’s promo is strictly for fans who were already planning to watch — there’s just nothing all that interesting to report! The last thing Archie (KJ Apa) needs is a new project, yet he’s going to expose a dog fighting ring, and it’s not like Riverdale’s ladies need an excuse to dance.
As for Hiram’s origin story this week: once you’ve seen one gangster story, you’ve seen them all. Even his mentor is named Vito (Louis Ferreira), like in The Godfather. It was nice to see Reggie (Charles Melton) get some attention for a change, and that the hour wasn’t completely Hiram-centric. Hermione (Marisol Nichols) has a lot to explain for, too, even though she seems to be doing just fine on reality television.
The downside of Hiram (Mark Consuelos) and Reggie sharing the spotlight, though, is that the show tries to make their situations comparable when they’re not. Hiram’s dad was a shoe shiner who didn’t want his son to get involved in a life of crime. Reggie’s dad (Matthew Yang King) has been physically and mentally abusive of him for years. He may not be ok with Reggie working for Hiram now, but he sure was fine with it when he owed Hiram money. Yet Hiram tries to make out like their fathers are the same — even going so far as to tell Reggie to go back to his abuser — and it’s a really unhealthy message to be sending to young people. No one should feel like they have to put up with being treated like that.
Riverdale airs Wednesdays on The CW.
