After nearly two years, Young Justice comes to the end with one last adventure. Does this issue bring the story to a satisfying conclusion?

Cover by John Timms & Gabe Eltaeb

This series hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been a lot of fun. It’s tough to see it go. It comes to us by Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker, Scott Godlewski, Gabe Eltaeb, and Wes Abbott.

The team relocates to their new home- Mount Justice, an abandoned Justice League base. However, the secrets of the base might just kill them all. Only Teen Lantern has any chance of saving them…

This story doesn’t feel like an ending, but more like an act break. It brings some threads to a close, sets up others and teases storylines to come. It definitely gives the indication that either the story was intended to continue or it will continue in another volume not far down the road. I think that’s actually for the best though, as the team’s script ends the series on a hopeful beat. Even if Bendis and Walker aren’t writing them, it’s clear that the group will continue to have adventures, maybe off screen.

Godlewski’s art has been one of the most enjoyable things about the last half of this series. In this issue, he has a great energy in his work. His layouts are dynamic and show through the art how much the characters- especially Teen Lantern- have grown over the course of the series. He also does several large splashes that are fantastic, especially with Eltaeb’s colors over his linework.

I’ll be sorry to see the series go, and hope it gets another chance in the future. It wasn’t perfect, especially with its pacing issues throughout, but it captured the feel of the characters and their core better than most anything had in years. If Bendis’ next stop at DC really is the Justice League, as has been hinted at but not confirmed, I hope this cast is involved.

Young Justice #20 is available now form DC Comics.
